Pickleball.

Most people can play a basic game within an hour of learning the rules. Within a few sessions you'll develop consistent shots. Reaching a solid beginner level (2.5–3.0) typically takes 2–4 months of regular play — faster if you take even one lesson.

Just a paddle ($40–80 for beginners) and court shoes with lateral support. Many recreation centers provide paddles for open play sessions, so you can try the sport for free before buying anything.

The Non-Volley Zone (NVZ), or "kitchen," is the 7-foot area on each side of the net. You cannot volley (hit the ball before it bounces) while any part of your body or paddle touches the kitchen — including your momentum carrying you in after a shot.

Pickleball uses a smaller court (about 1/4 the size of tennis), a lighter perforated plastic ball, solid paddles without strings, and requires an underhand serve. The kitchen rule and slower ball speed make it far more accessible for all ages and fitness levels.

Doubles (4 players) is the most popular format, but singles is also played. For open play sessions, you simply show up and rotate in — you'll never be stuck without someone to play. It's one of the most social sports you can join.

Much less so than tennis, due to the smaller court, slower ball, and shorter rallies. It's wildly popular with players of all ages including seniors. Proper court shoes with lateral support and a good warm-up make a big difference.

Before every serve, the server announces three numbers: their team's score, the opponent's score, and whether they're the first or second server. Example: "4-2-1" means serving team has 4, opponents have 2, and it's the first server's turn.
