Thursday Night Farmers Market
If your visit includes a Thursday, this is non-negotiable. Downtown Higuera Street becomes a street festival of barbecue, produce, and live music. Your student already knows it; letting them lead the route is the point.
Hike a Morro
Bishop Peak is the classic SLO hike and the view your student's photos have not done justice to. Two to three hours round trip. Cerro San Luis is the gentler alternative. Go morning, beat the heat, earn the brunch.
A family pickleball session
The activity where parents, students, and visiting siblings all actually play together. If the family has paddles-in-garage energy, find open courts around SLO Pickleball in San Luis Obispo, or book a private hosted hour where equipment and games are handled and nobody argues about rules. Fastest-growing sport in America, and this weekend is a fine excuse to see why.
Madonna Inn
Take the family to see the pink landmark: a slice of famously oversized cake, the copper steakhouse, the legendary waterfall bathroom. It is the SLO thing every visiting family should do once.
Avila Beach afternoon
Fifteen minutes from campus, warmer and calmer than the open coast. Boardwalk, beach, and a family-friendly pier. The easy Saturday afternoon block.
One great family dinner downtown
SLO's restaurant scene outperforms its size. Book ahead: Parents Weekend fills tables fast, and parties over six should reserve the week prior at minimum.
Coffee like a local
Let your student pick the shop. This is secretly the best 45 minutes of the weekend: their turf, their order, their stories.
The Highway 1 add-on
Staying through Sunday? Drive north through Morro Bay and Cambria, with elephant seals at San Simeon and Hearst Castle if you booked tours ahead.
Booking reality for Parents Weekend
Hotels and restaurants price up and sell out for official family weekends. Book lodging the month you know your dates, and dinner reservations two weeks out. Cal Poly publishes the official weekend each year, so confirm before you book.
